Women's Hoops Downs SIUE in Hatter Classic Finale

Angel Golden pours in 21 during the B-CU win

DeLAND, Fla. --  Angel Golden scored 21 points as Bethune-Cookman Women's Basketball defeated SIU-Edwardsville 83-78 in the Hatter Classic on Tuesday afternoon inside the Edmunds Center on the campus of Stetson University.

Taylor Houston scored 17, Kailyn Williams 16 and Kanesha Battle 14 as the Wildcats (4-7) scored 31 points in the first quarter en route to a season-high team effort in the scoring department.

SIU-Edwardsville (3-9) tied the game at 78-78 on Nakia Bell's three-pointer with 1:10 remaining. But Bethune-Cookman ended a 5:57 stretch without a field goal to regain the lead on Battle's three-pointer with 47 seconds to play.

The Wildcats' biggest lead was at 61-49 on a Golden jumper with 4:59 left in the third quarter.

Houston added two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to preserve the victor, allowing the Maroon and Gold to finish the Hatter Classic with an even 1-1 record.

Golden, a sophomore, was 8-of-15 shooting from the field, as she reached double figures for the third time in four games.

Kailyn Williams, who also had nine rebounds and five blocks on the day, was named to the all-tournament team.

B-CU returns to action December 29 at Clemson.

HEAD COACH VANESSA BLAIR LEWIS QUOTES
"We haven't been able to score, and they say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I didn't want to do same thing over and over again. We recruited these players for our program for a reason and we unleashed them tonight."

"I wasn't looking at the score too much before, because we've been there before. It was a matter of each possession, each second."

"Kailyn [Williams] may have been all-tournament, but Angel [Golden] was right behind her. She had two great stat lines. I couldn't believe she played almost 40 minutes. She had come on strong."

"If you had asked me if we could put 80 on the scoreboard, I wouldn't have believed it possible after how we played yesterday. We've been in a place where we didn't think we would be. The non-conference slate gives you a chance to find out who you are."

KANESHA BATTLE QUOTES
"I felt confident shooting the ball. We've had a rough start, but I figured if I could make some shots, then Coach would be happy."

"I was excited about the start, almost overwhelmed. I settled down and the game came to me."

ANGEL GOLDEN QUOTES
"This feels really good being able to contribute for the team in a win."

"The key is just having confidence. I wanted to keep shooting."
