DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Were the Bethune-Cookman tennis teams celebrating Jose Plazas and Victor Bravo's doubles victory in the final match of the Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational or was their joy focused on that the three-day tournament was over Sunday afternoon?
Yes.
Alejandra Vidal and
Phatsimo Ruele won their respective singles flight and combined to win a doubles title, and Bravo finished second in his second flight to highlight the Bethune-Cookman on-the court efforts, and the program enjoyed the satisfaction of its signature clay court event honoring its late team captain returning to action after a year's absence.
Fifteen teams competed in the three-day event at the Florida Tennis Center. Varon's family made the trip from Colombia to attend.
"It was a rewarding tournament in more ways than one," said B-CU Head Coach
Val Villucci. "The tournament ran well as a whole, and we're thankful to everyone who made it a special event. "Everyone who knew Juan or knew of hum were touched to be able to be connected to his family this weekend. My hope is this tournament helps them continue to be strong. "
Vidal, a senior and the women's team captain, defeated Andrada Gorda of St. Leo 7-6 6-3 in the deciding match of her flight. She finished the tournament 3-1, and combined with Ruele to win the Women's C Doubles Flight.
Ruele, who went 2-12 as a freshman during the spring 2017 season, capped off a 3-0 tournament run run with a 6-7 7-6 (10-5) victory over Keiser's Florencia Roncatti.
"This boosts my confidence," said Ruele. "Last season, I was playing defensive most of the time so now I've let offense take charge of my game. I was doing well at the end of the last season, so this is a continuation.
Bravo's hope for a flight title ended with a 6-3 6-2 loss to Flagler's Rasmus Jonsson.
"Great success for Alejandra and Phatsimo and a great run by Victor," Villucci said. "The past few tournaments have helped them to play well and battle through the elements."
St. Leo's men's team won five individual singles flights and two doubles flights. Thomas Grinberg, Vincent Suillerot and Williem Van Den Akker were multiple winners for St. Leo. Daniela Karfan of Keiser won a women's singles and doubles flight.
This was the final Fall season event for both Bethune-Cookman teams. The spring season opens January 20, 2018 with the men playing at Stetson and the women following the next day.
