DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Angel Golden scored a career-high 28 points as Bethune-Cookman opened the season with a 101-60 victory over Edward Waters Friday evening in Moore Gym.

Golden, a junior, was 10-14 from the field, including 6 of 10 from three-point range, as the Lady Wildcats scored the game's first 11 points and went on to post their highest point total in the Vanessa Blair-Lewis era.

Kanesha Battle added 15 points, Chasimmee Brown 14, Brianna Battle 13 and Amaya Scott 11 for Bethune-Cookman, who led by as many as 51 in the fourth quarter. Brown finished with six boards, and senior Emily Williams' six assists keyed a team total of 30.

Golden had 11 first-quarter points as the Wildcats pushed that 11-0 start into a 26-8 first quarter lead. The Lady Wildcat defense held the Tigers to 20 percent field goal shooting and forced six turnovers.

Lashe Kirkland and Brittany Rowell led Edward Waters (7-2) with 15 points apiece.

The Wildcats travel to FIU Monday night.

HEAD COACH VANESSA BLAIR-LEWIS

"We just wanted to come out tonight and solidify ourselves in this new era, this team. Not what was in the past, not who we graduated, but these young ladies who are now the new era for Lady wildcats and I thought that everybody came and contributed, and gave everyone a taste of who we are and what we are going to be like this year

"I congratulated them in the locker room about having 30 assists. "How unselfishly they played was really great to watch."

"Angel Golden was always her own person, you know, she was on the floor a lot of times with someone [Kendra Cooper] who it was her time. Angel has always done her part when she came in, I think the biggest thing a lot of people don't see about her is how she's grown as a defensive player. Now not only do we know she can shoot the ball, but defensively, she one of our better defensive players.

"Chasimmie ate up everything in the lane today. I think she took in advantage of her matchup, she was confident. This time, last year she was probably a little nervous in some of those games, when she miss some of those easy put backs that we knew she could have made, but just like everyone else's time has come, her  time has come, and she solidified herself as our center for this team for this era."

ANGEL GOLDEN

" I was just focusing on getting hot early."

CHASIMMIE BROWN

"I think that we all did a great job tonight but, as far as the post, we've been taking advantage of the mismatches we had out there. And we really got made in the paint tonight.

KANESHA BATTLE

"It's a blessing to be reunited with my sister Brianna. Now that we're back on the court, I feel as if we still have that chemistry when she wasn't with me at the present time, now she's here it's like we are unstoppable when we are together."

NOTES: The 30 assists were also the most ever for a Blair-Lewis team…this was the second the Wildcats have reached 100 under the 10th-year coach; the last time was against Warner in 2015 … Blair-Lewis is now 7-3 in season-openers at B-CU and 8-11 overall … This was the sixth time Golden has led the team in scoring.
