STRATFORD, N.J. – After more than seven months away from the lanes competitively, Bethune-Cookman Bowling was back in action over the weekend in the 2017-18 season opening FDU New Jersey Jamboree at 30 Strikes Lanes. The three-day event was hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson and stretched Friday through Sunday.
Â
The Wildcats fought hard under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach
Charles Thomas, using six total bowlers in the annual tournament, including four newcomers to the 2017-18 roster.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (1-10) began the weekend on Friday, Nov. 3, taking part in five Tradition matches.
Â
The Cats matched up first against 15th-ranked Adelphi, eventually falling in a tough one, 900-747. It would be the first of four consecutive ranked team faced on the day by the Maroon and Gold.
Â
In their second Traditional match, BCU fell to No. 9 Sacred Heart (956-705), while then suffering a nail-biting 859-839 setback at the hands of No. 21 St. Francis (Brooklyn). BCU would then fall to host and eighth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson by a score of 988-737, before suffering an 888-789 defeat to Wilmington (Delaware) to close the opening day of action.
Â
On Saturday, the Maroon and Gold took part in just four Baker matches, while bowling blind in a bye for one event.
Â
BCU opened with a 936-721 setback to Caldwell, only to then fight tough despite a loss in its next match to No. 16 LIU-Brooklyn (915-678). In the third match of the day, the Wildcats fell to No. 13 Monmouth (1,013-779).
Â
The final Baker match of the day was a tough 875-672 setback to Chestnut Hill College.
Â
Sunday's formula saw teams bowl in a seeded draw based on the total pin count from the previous two days of action.
Â
The Cats held the No. 15 seed out of the 15 participating teams, but opened the day with a positive performance in a 4-1 win over Wilmington (DE). That advanced the Maroon and Gold to a match against fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Howard, where the Cats suffered a 4-1 setback to the Bison and ended its stay in the annual tournament hosted by the Knights of FDU.
Â
Bowling well for the Wildcats on the weekend was freshman
Nia Grinion (Miami, Fla.). The Ransom Everglades product registered a high game of 184 in the Traditional opener to Adelphi. She bounced back with a 177 game against the host Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson.
Â
Also bowling well was senior
Amyre Tensley. The Detroit native had a team-high 198 against Adelphi, and she also had a weekend best game of 200 against Wilmington (DE).
Â
Bethune-Cookman is back in action November 11-12, traveling to the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division event of the season in Norfolk, Virginia. The two-day event will be hosted by Norfolk State.
