BALTIMORE – Diamante Lewis scored 18 points in Bethune-Cookman's 76-72 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss at Coppin State Saturday.
Quinton Forrest (16 points) tied the game at 72-72 for the Wildcats (5-19 overall, 2-8 conference) on a lay-up with 1:47 remaining, but Coppin State's Keith Shivers put the Eagles (6-20, 5-6) back up on a lay-up with 1:23 left.
The Wildcats had the final shot, but came up short and Tre Thomas added two free throws to preserve the Eagle victory.
Brandon Tabb added 12 points and
Reggie Baker nine as the Wildcats scored the final seven points of the first half to take a 38-35 halftime and built their lead to 11 on two occasions – 46-35 on Lewis' three-pointer with 18:35 left and 51-40 with 16:43 left on a Forrest three-pointer.
Coppin State took the lead on a Shivers dunk that made it 58-57 with 11:03 left. A Forrest basket helped B-CU regain the lead, but Coppin State answered and held a smal lead untill a Lewis lay-up made it 70-68 with 2:47 to play.
DeJuan Clayton led Coppin State with 15.
Bethune-Cookman plays Maryland Eastern Shore Monday.
NOTES: The Wildcats outshot the Eagles 47.3 to 42.9 from the field, outrebounded the Eagle 33-29 and committed the same amount of turnovers (14) ... B-CU was a season-best 12-13 from the line ... Lewis has scored 18 in each of the last two games
