Women's Hoops Stretches Win Streak to Nine at N.C. A&T

Wildcats take down Aggies in Greensboro, N.C.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashanti Hunt scored 13 points and Chasimmie Brown added 11, as visiting Bethune-Cookman finished  its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road schedule undefeated with a 65-60 victory over defending MEAC Tournament champion North Carolina A&T on Monday evening at Corbett Sports Center.

Hunt, Taylor Houston and Kendra Cooper combined to make eight free throws as the Wildcats (18-9 overall, 14-1 MEAC) pulled away from a 55-55 tie late in the ballgame. The Aggies were held scoreless on four consecutive possessions in the final two minutes.

North Carolina A&T led 39-33 with 4:27 remaining in the third quarter, but Bethune-Cookman regained the lead at 42-41 on an Armani Walker three-point play with 1:43 left in the period. After North Carolina A&T briefly regained the lead, Houston hit a three-pointer and Walker hit a lay-up that gave BCU a 47-43 lead entering the final period.

Hunt, who also had eight rebounds, gave Bethune-Cookman a 53-46 lead on a free throw with 6:28 remaining, but North Carolina A&T used a 9-2 run to tie the ballgame.

Cooper, Emily Williams and Walker each scored nine points, while Kailyn Williams posted seven points, 12 rebounds and four blocks as Bethune-Cookman won its ninth straight game. For the Cats, the win was the first of its kind at North Carolina A&T since 2004.

Dana Brown led North Carolina A&T with 17 points.

Bethune-Cookman hosts Florida A&M in the regular season finale for both teams on Thursday, March 2, inside Moore Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.

VANESSA BLAIR LEWIS

"To win a tournament championship, you're going to have to go through good teams and games like this."

"A&T gave us a great fight and we had to be resilient to get this win."

"This wasn't our best offensive game and the free throws weren't falling. Defense has been our mainstay all season."

""We've never beaten North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, so this a big win for the program. The team has taken care of everything it wanted to take care of in the regular season.""

ASHANTI HUNT

"Nothing was going our way so we did what we usually do – play defense."

CHASIMMIE BROWN

"I felt like I had to come in and give that offensive presence.  We needed some points in the paint and that's what I'm expected to do."

NOTES
Kailyn Williams improved her career block total to 435, passing Duke's Alison Bales for seventh on the all-time list; this was her third double-figure rebounding night in the last four games…Brown was in double figures since her 13-point, 11-rebound double-double in the season opener against Edward Waters.
