Catorina Sirmon's first-place finish and school record in the shot put was one of the top highlights for Bethune-Cookman at the Mt. Sac Relays in Torrence, Calif. this weekend.
The redshirt senior's heave of 52 feet outdistanced runner-up Taylor Potts of Tulane's 51-10 1/2 and put her into contential for a strong performance at the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament and NCAA Regional.
"It's a huge victory," said B-CU Director of Track and Field
Donald Cooper on Sirmon's effort. You're talking about moving from her previous best of 50 feet to 52 feet in a weekend. She'll definitely compete at NCAA."
The entire trip to the left coast was successful both on and off the track for Cooper and the Wildcats.
"Definitely big for our brand," Cooper said. "West coast track circles really have never heard of Bethune-Cookman and were wondering what we doing so far out there. We had a lot of interest come out of this."
The level competition also was something to see. Take
Quamecha Morrison's fifth in the high jump. She posted a 5-10.
Ahead of her was an SEC competitor and three professionals, and the winner was Vashti Cunningham -- the daughter of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham as well as the world's top-ranked high jumper.
"That was a great experience for Quamecha," Cooper said/
