@BCUWBB Fends Off FAMU 44-42 Behind Battle, Hunt

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Brianna Battle scored 12 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:19 remaining as Bethune-Cookman fended off Florida A&M Saturday for a 44-42 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory in Historic Moore Gym.

Ashanti Hunt added 11 points and made two key defensive plays after Battle's shot to help the Lady Wildcats (12-4 overall, 4-0 MEAC) win their 14th consecutive conference regular season game dating back to last season.

Florida A&M (3-14, 1-3) took a 42-40 lead on Dy'Manee Royal's lay-up with 1:31 left, but Battle answered with her fourth three-pointer of the game to give the Lady Wildcats the lead.

Hunt registered a blocked shot and then registered a steal that stopped a Rattler fast break that allowed the Lady Wildcats to hold possession.

Angel Golden made it 44-42 on a free throw with six seconds left. Florida A&M wasn't able to get a shot off before time expired.
Chasimmie Brown and Golden scored nine and eight, respectively, for the Lady Wildcats, who have now beaten Florida A&M four straight times.

Florida A&M started the game on a 7-0 run, but B-CU used a 10-0 run to take a 15-13 lead on a Golden three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Bethune-Cookman led 27-22 at halftime.

Shalunda Burney-Robinson led Florida A&M with 11.

Bethune-Cookman plays Delaware State next Saturday.

HEAD COACH VANESSA BLAIR-LEWIS

"We came out with every intent to execute the game plan. They did a good job of making adjustments. It was a tough-fought game all around."

"If Brianna doesn't hit, we don't win this game. Plain and simple. Everybody had trouble putting the ball in the basket, but Brianna came in and shot with confidence."

"If Ashanti doesn't make that stop, who knows how it would turn out. Her leadership on the defensive end was big."

"We have to be able to finish and be more consistent"

Brianna Battle

"Coach Dante Travis had a talk with me before the game. He told me he missed the old Bri and hope she would show up tonight."

"When I hit my first shot, I knew I was back."

Ashanti Hunt

"If we weren't going to score, Florida A&M wasn't going to score either. I knew I had a big task stopping [Florence Ouattara] so I tried to get in position so if she put up a shot, she'd miss.
NOTES: This was the lowest scoring output for both the Lady Wildcats and their opponent this season …B-CU has held its opponents under 10 points in the fourth quarter in the last three games … Battle hadn't scored in the last four games since returning from an injury … Hunt registered her fourth consecutive game in double-figures … B-CU now 4-0 this season when Head Coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis' husband Eric works an NBA game the same day … B-CU has now won seven straight and 18 of its last 19 home MEAC games...Today's Honorary Coach was Interim President Hubert Grimes.
