BCU Looks Sharp at FAMU Invitational

Wildcats earn big wins in Tallahassee event

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman Bowling team was back in action this weekend, taking part in the three-day FAMU Invitational hosted by Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Florida. The event ran Friday, Jan. 26, through Sunday, Jan. 28, and was hosted by Florida A&M University.

The second annual event began Friday with each team taking part in five Baker matches.

The Wildcats (10-54) would open with a 4-1 record in Baker play.

BCU claimed a 705-673 win over Southern (La.) in the opener, followed by a tough 902-731 setback against perennial Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) power Alabama State. However, the Maroon and Gold would rally for back-to-back wins over SWAC opponents, including Grambling State (743-670) and Alabama A&M (793-633), respectfully.

The final match of the day for BCU was an impressive 805-622 decision over Belmont Abbey.

On Saturday's day two action, BCU competed in five Traditional games.

The Wildcats opened Traditional games with a heartbreaking 899-870 defeat to the host Rattlers of Florida A&M. That was followed by an 862-742 setback against Texas Southern out of the SWAC.

In the opening game against FAMU, it was freshman Danielle Moreno (South Daytona, Fla.) providing a spark with a season-best 230 score, while senior captain Amyre Tensley (Detroit, Mich.) produced a 201 game of her own.

The Cats suffered an 828-746 defeat at the hands of Southern (La.) in the next game of the day, followed by an 859-772 tumble against Alabama State. The final game for the Cats saw BCU top Grambling State, 797-709 in a thrilling contest.

Once again, it would be Tensley with a 200-plus performance in the finale, as the Detroit senior collected a 203 contest in the win over the Tigers.

Sunday's bracket portion of the tournament saw Bethune-Cookman face Belmont Abbey in the opening game of a Baker style match. The Cats were victorious in their opening contest, using a 4-2 decision en route to the next match in the bracket. BCU next faced Southern (La.), but would fall to the Jaguars in one of the day's most exciting matches, 4-3.

The Maroon and Gold concluded the tournament with a 4-0 defeat to Belmont Abbey.

BCU finished up the weekend sporting a 6-9 record, the best-to-date tournament record for the Wildcats this season.

Bethune-Cookman has a slight break until their next tournament when they travel to the SFA Jacks Invitational on February 16-18, hosted by Stephen F. Austin in Houston.
