Cats compete hard at Stormin' Ladyjack Classic

HOUSTON – The Bethune-Cookman bowling team  finished 17th this weekend at the Stormin' Ladyjack Classic hosted by Stephen F. Austin University.

The Wildcats concluded the three-day tournament with a bit of dramatic flair, rallying from deficits of two games to none and three games to one to beat St. Francis College 4-3 in the final match of the tournament. The seventh game was decided by one pin, with Bethune-Cookman taking a 186-185 victory.

Bethune-Cookman went 1-12 in head-to-head competition, dropping five games in Baker play on Friday and five traditional matches Saturday.

On Sunday, St. Francis started with a 4-1 victory over the Wildcats. Bethune-Cookman met Nebraska and dropped a 4-0 decision before taking the rematch with St. Francis.

Danielle Moreno led the Wildcats in individual competition, averaging a pin fall of 186.4 during traditional play with a high of 204 vs.  Adelphi.   She finished 50th overall.

Amyre Tensley averaged 167.2 and was 63rd with a high of 203 in the opener vs. St. Francis. Nia Grinion (164.2, 184 vs. Adelphi) followed in 64th, while Bethany Gray-Shealey was 67th (154.8) and a 178 vs. Duquesne. Diamond Cummings rounded out individual in 72nd with an average of 149.8 and a high game of 164 vs. St. Francis.

Team-wise, Bethune-Cookman recorded a combined pin fall of 10,973 in Baker and Traditional play for a team average of 166.

On Friday, Bethune-Cookman competed in Baker play, dropping decisions to Wisconsin-Whitewater (976-771), Maryland-Eastern Shore (938-847), Alabama-Birmingham (851-784), McKendree (984-767) and Maryville (911-840).

St. Francis downed the Wildcats twice in traditional play (820-814 and 974-810). Duquesne won 925-817, Adelphi 969-883 and Long Island 996-788.

Nebraska defeated McKendree 4-2 in the championship match. Tulane's Tiera Gulium took individual honors with an average of 229.4.

Bethune-Cookman returns to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play next weekend in the third and final Southern Division meeting hosted by North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, North Carolina.
