Baseball Drops Series Finale to Milwaukee

Wildcats collect 12 hits in the loss

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Five different players collected multi-hit outings for Bethune-Cookman on Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough as visiting Milwaukee took the final game of a three-game series against the Wildcats, 15-4 in non-conference action at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Despite the loss, the Wildcats collected the series win with Friday and Saturday victories.

Milwaukee (2-5) was able to find the offense and stave off a Sunday sweep, as the Panthers registered 19 hits in the final game of the series.

The Panthers wasted little time getting to Bethune-Cookman freshman Jeremy Adams on the mound. Adams, this past week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, reached 54 pitches in just three innings of work, as the Panthers struck for seven runs off the rookie on eight hits. However, he did amass four strikeouts on the day.

Bethune-Cookman (3-5) trailed 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Junior first baseman Danny Rodrigues began the BCU at-bat in the fourth with a double inside the bag at third, followed by catcher Giovany Lorenzo's RBI single to left that crossed Rodriguez for the Wildcats' first run of the game. After Lorenzo was caught stealing on a near passed ball by Panthers catcher Matt Quartel, BCU's Joseph Fernando lifted his first home run of the year to left field, cutting into the deficit, 7-2.

The Wildcats would add another un in the bottom of the fifth when a fielding error by Milwaukee's Oakland Scanlon at first on the throw from Mitch Buban allowed Kyle Corbin to reach safely, as well as teammate Ian Claudio to score from third.

However, Milwaukee used two runs in the sixth, and another big inning with six in the eighth to make the lead insurmountable.

Bethune-Cookman would pull a run back in the home-half of the ninth through Corbin's RBI single past shortstop Buban that scored Claudio. That produced the final 15-4 score line in favor of the visitors.

The win was picked up by Alex Fischer as he went the fifth and sixth innings on the mound for the Panthers. He collected his first decision of the year with a hit allowed and three strikeouts. Panthers starter Matt Vanek was removed from the game just six pitches in with an apparent injury.

The loss went to BCU's Adams as he worked three innings on the bump, allowing seven runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Tyler Krull went 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just two hits, one walk and picking up a strikeout. And it was sophomore Bobby Stewart closing the final 1.1 innings with just a hit allowed and collecting a pair of strikeouts.

Jameel Edney went 2-for-4 at the top of the order for Bethune-Cookman. Giovany Lorenzo was 2-for-5 adding a RBI. Fernando used a 2-for-4 game with the home run. Ian Claudio supplied a 2-for-4 day with a pair of runs. And it was center fielder Zach Spivey going 2-for-4 at the dish as well.

Bethune-Cookman continues its nine-game homestand against in-state opponent UCF on Tuesday at 6 p.m., back at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
