DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --
Alejandra Vidal won her 100th career combined victory as Bethune-Cookman downed Southern 4-1 Sunday at City Island Tennis Center.
The senior from Maracaibo, Venezula combined with
Karen Romero for a 6-2 doubles victory over Stephanie Mbaya and Chakanyuka for her 52nd doubles victory, then her 7-6,6-4 decision over Chakanyuka at No. 3 singles for her 48th singles win also clinched the match for the Lady Wildcats (5-5) as they won their fifth straight.
"One hundred is a big number. It's a lot of tennis, it's a lot of mental strength, and that's who Alejandra is," said B-CU Head Coach
Val Villucci. "You can't win on talent alone. It's mental toughness, and she has that.
"She's our leader, and she's been there through the good and the bad," Villucci added. "She holds everyone to a standard, and that's what makes her a good leader.
Vidal helped the 2015 team win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship, the program's first since 2001. She's the seventh recorded player to reach 100 wins.
"It feels good to get the win in a tough match, especially after being down 5-1 to win that first set," Vidal said. "We still have a lot of tennis to play and I want to get back to a championship."
Matea Roki and Rehanna Butt each won their fifth straight singles match at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively and combined for the other doubles victory for a shorthanded Lady Wildcat team that's at .500 after starting the season 0-5. This was the second straight match and third in the streak where Bethune-Cookman won all its on-the court matches.
Bethune-Cookman hosts Fordham Tuesday.
