HOLLYWOOD,
S.C. - The Bethune-Cookman
men's golf team finished third overall at this year's Charleston Shootout at
The Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C. The College of Charleston served as
host for the tournament.
Bethune-Cookman
freshman Leon Fricker, a native of Ivybridge, England, led the Wildcats'
scoring with a one-over, 217. That allowed Fricker to tie for fourth place
overall in a field that saw numerous top-150 golfers in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin
Rankings. For Fricker, the younger brother of B-CU golfer Ryan Fricker, the
fourth place finish served as his second top-five appearance of the season,
claiming the individual trophy at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational in the fall.
B-CU junior Emmanuel Petrich, a
native of Grand Blanc, Mich., picked up his third top-15 finish on the campaign,
firing a three-round score of five-over, 221 to finish tied for 13th in the
tournament field.
As a team, B-CU shot 890
overall, finishing just nine strokes off the lead. USC Upstate took home the
team trophy with an 881, followed by Sam Houston State (886). Both Charleston
Southern (894) and Fairleigh Dickinson (898) rounded out the top-five teams.
Other B-CU Wildcats golfers
included Ryan Fricker finishing tied for 35th and firing a 227 (+11), as well
as JaMichael Jones (+17, 233) and Matthew McKnight (+30, 246).
Senior Alex Clapp, playing as
an individual, did not finish the event, but shot a second-round four-over, 76
before withdrawing prior to the third round on Tuesday.
Easton Renwick of Coastal
Carolina won the individual trophy after three holes of playoff competition,
surpassing John Duke Hudson (College of Charleston) and Hayden Garrett
(Clemson), respectively. All three golfers finished the tournament with an
even-par, 216 score card.
Tuesday's play began with
golfers finishing the second round which was suspended on Monday evening due to
darkness.
One of the highlights of the
tournament came from Fairleigh Dickinson's Eduardo Escobar who registered a
hole-in-one on the 173-yard par-3 second hole with a 6-iron.
Bethune-Cookman men's golf will
next hit the links when traveling to the Butler Invitational on March 10-12 in
Jacksonville, Fla.
