GREENSBORO, N.C. - Bethune-Cookman track & field enters its postseason on Thursday at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field East Region Preliminary Championships, with the qualification of Tristie Johnson for competition in two events at Irwin Belk Track.
A freshman sprinter from Jacksonville, Fla., Johnson will represent the Wildcats in the women's 100m and 200m. She will run her first race on Thursday (May 23) at 6:30 p.m., competing in the 100m. Johnson enters the meet ranking 41st in the East Region, logging a career-best time at the Miami Hurricane Invitational.
“It's going to be a challenge for her to move to the next round in the 100m,” Head Coach Donald Cooper noted. “She'll have to nail her start, be very aggressive the first 20 meters out of the blocks and using the position she can gain from that, her chances become very good.”
Just as in her primary race, the 200m, Johnson steadily made strides across the course of the season.
If Johnson advances on Thursday, the second round of the 100m is Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Johnson's second scheduled event is set for Friday at 8 p.m., taking on the 200m. Johnson ranks 13th in the East after peaking at the right time, scoring a personal record time of 23.21 in the finals at the MEAC Outdoor Championships.
“She has an opportunity that a lot of other runners don't have, being here to compete in two races,” Cooper noted.
The second round of the 200m is scheduled for Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
“Going in, she's always anxious, but at the same time, she's able to realize that she is talented and has earned the right to compete among the best,” Cooper said.
Admission for the NCAA East Region Preliminary Championships is $10 for adults and $7 for youth per day. For more ticket options and information, contact the North Carolina A&T ticket office at 336-334-7749.
