DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman softball opens its 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference slate Friday, April 3 as the Wildcats (7-24, 0-0 MEAC) host the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs (5-14, 0-3 MEAC) in doubleheader action beginning at 1 p.m., at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach.
Game three of the series is slated for a noon first pitch on Saturday, April 4.
Wildcat Facts
Senior Calesha Shelly tallies a team-best .300 batting average on the season, collecting 33 hits during her 100 at bats, adding two triples and five RBIs. She also leads the 'Cats on the bases with six stolen bases during her 10 attempts and has crossed home plate a team-best 16 times.
Sophomore Sabrina Anguiano (4-20) heads the B-CU pitching staff starting in 22 games while appearing in 27. The 5-7 hurler has fanned 56 total batters while posting a 5.30 ERA during non-conference competition.
Rookie Nereyda Gutierrez and junior Sophia Ortega earned All-Tournament Honors at the Charleston Challenge during opening weekend.
Ortega was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week while Anguiano earned MEAC Pitcher of the Week and Gutierrez Rookie of the Week (Feb. 9).
Sophomore Bailey Conner earned MEAC Pitcher of the Week honors (Feb. 23) while freshman Mariah Davis earned Rookie of the Week (March 2).
Scouting the Bulldogs
Senior Mikala Johnson leads SCSU's offensive efforts batting .370 on the season with 17 hits on 46 at bats. The Bulldog infielder has collected five doubles and one homer during her 16 games.
Sophomore RHP's Jareece Sayles (3-9) and Kierra Cromer (2-2) have split the Bulldog victories this season. Sayles boosts a team-best 3.88 ERA while Cromer trails with 3.93. The duo has struck out a total of 56 batters with 47 and nine respectively.
