Series Battle for MEAC Top Spot to Begin Friday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Due to the threat of severe weather in the Savannah area, Bethune-Cookman softball hits the road a day early, as the Wildcats square off with the Savannah State Tigers for the battle of the No. 1 spot in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference southern division Friday, April 24 at Lady Tiger Field in Savannah, Georgia.

Game one of the three-game series has been bumped up to Friday, April 24 at 1 p.m., followed by the doubleheader game slated for 3 p.m. The series will conclude on Saturday, April 25 with a single game at noon.

Currently, B-CU and SSU are knotted at No. 1 in the league, both posting 8-1 records in MEAC action. The Wildcats are 15-25 on the season while the Tigers are 15-15.

Wildcat Facts

Senior Calesha Shelley leads the team at the plate with a .396 season batting average while posting a conference second-best .588 during MEAC games and a perfect 13-for-13 stolen bases in league competition. Trailing Shelley is junior Sophia Ortega who boosts a .339 overall batting average.

On the mound for B-CU, sophomore Sabrina Anguiano (12-21, 8-1 MEAC) currently leads the league with a 4.16 ERA, posting an impressive 0.98 ERA during MEAC match-ups. During her 36 appearances, she has made 31 starts, struck out 85 batters, while walking 58.

Scouting the Tigers

SSU is coming off two-straight MEAC series sweeps, with home wins against North Carolina Central and road victories at North Carolina A&T. The Tigers lone conference loss came during a MEAC opening match-up in Tallahassee, Florida when SSU fell 3-2 to Florida A&M.

Junior Torrian Wright continues to not only lead the MEAC at the plate, but also leads the nation with a .545 batting average on the season. The SSU infielder also boosts the nation's-best slugging percentage with a 1.273 after collecting 15 homers this season.

Freshman hurler Ashley Eichenlaub (10-8, 5-1 MEAC) heads the SSU pitching staff on the season with a 6.91 ERA. During her 22 appearances she has struck out 32 batters and walked 60. Eichenlaub's counterpart, sophomore Amanda Hallman (5-7, 3-0 MEAC) posts a 9.46 season ERA with 47 strike outs and 52 walks during her 17 appearances on the mound.
