ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman softball survives to see another day after the Wildcats sent home the Hampton Pirates during a nightcap shutout (5-0) in the elimination bracket of the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship, Friday, May 8 in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Sophomore pitcher Sabrina Anguiano (18-24) threw her third shutout of the league tournament, as the 5-7 hurler has yet to have an earned run scored on her.
Playing visitors after the coin toss, B-CU jumped out to an early lead after Calesha Shelley led off with a single to left field, followed by a stolen base. As Shelley headed to steal third, the Hampton catcher over threw the base on the pickoff attempt, allowing Shelley to continue home and put the 'Cats on the board 1-0 with no outs.
Rookie Mariah Davis followed with a single before Sophia Ortega moved Davis into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
A Geena Capitini single to right center was enough for Davis to cross the plate, giving the Wildcats the early 2-0 lead after the top half of the first.
One hit for Hampton in the bottom of the first was not enough to get anything going while both teams saw 1-2-3 innings at the plate in the second.
After a Shelley ground out to open the third, Davis followed with a single up the middle and was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice during Ortega's at bat.
Melissa Berouty used a single to left field to get on, and with two outs Capitini singled through the right side, picking up her second RBI of the game, scoring Davis from second.
With the Wildcats on top 3-0, innings four through six remained scoreless between both squads.
B-CU added to its lead during the Wildcats final at bat as Kaitlin Alamprese led off beating out a grounder to short stop followed by a Shelley walk. The sac bunt from Davis moved the runners, before Ortega sent a ball to right field, scoring Alamprese and Shelley, pushing the 'Cats lead to 5-0.
Hampton was unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning as the Wildcats sealed the 5-0 victory.
Ortega and Capitini led Bethune-Cookman's offensive effort both collecting two hits and two RBIs, while Davis and Berouty also added two hits apiece.
The Wildcats will face cross-state rival Florida A&M during a 2014 MEAC Championship game rematch, Saturday May 9 at 1 p.m. A B-CU victory will force a second game for the MEAC title.
