Takeaways from the Nebraska Weekend ... And Other Stuff

It was one of the busiest weekends @BCUathletics has had in a while

Final takeaways and looks from an amazing weekend and probably the only time anyone will ever use the word "runzagate"…..

Let's get that out of the way, first. A runza is a delicacy that is to Nebraska what Bethune Grill wings are to Daytona Beach. During the game, Johnny McCray, a former Bethune-Cookman trustee and Eugene Richardson, a Wildcat basketball legend, are on the sidelines and decide to try one for themselves. A nice young twitterer named Bryson Nemecek captures the moment and sends it out to social media that COACHES are eating Runzas on the sidelines, not knowing who our guys are.

Despite our best attempts to provide accurate information, actual media outlets that are supposed to be bastions of quality sports journalism are the ones making this non-story go viral faster than Kendrick Lamar's left stroke.

Now, folks, I can live with 83.3 percent of the snarkiness associated with my team being outmatched by one of the greatest college football programs in the history of the planet. It's when you're mistakenly throwing my guys – the coaching staff – under the bus by even implying they'd pull an unprofessional stunt like that is when we have to have a "come-to-Jesus".

Fortunately, a professional sports journalist named Dirk Chatelain from the Omaha World Leader would go down to the field and did some - what's that thing media used to be really good at? Oh, yeah … reporting!  – and produce a nice write that pretty much covered all our experiences with FBS Power 5 school. Chatelain also delivered a beautiful Uriel Hernandez piece after the game. The day was saved. Runzas were eaten. We have Bethune Grill wings back home. The world is a slightly better place.

Now, that being said…

Everything you heard about Nebraska and its fan base is true and then some. Civility and kindness still exists.

1) Our equipment truck is a couple of hundred miles outside of Lincoln. Pulls into a gas station. Some one pays for a full tank and wishes us well.

2) The Lincoln Police Department took to twitter Sunday morning to apologize for the slightest of shoves to get Hernandez back to the locker room after he won the internet and the hearts of Nebraska post-game.  Wow. They were just doing their jobs.

3) At last check, more than 30 "thank you" and "respect" tweets to @BCUGridIron after the game. By the way, 117,000 twitter impressions in 24 hours. It's going to be hard for the Florida Blue Florida Classic weekend to top that.

4) Team's at Golden Corral and can barely get dinner in because all the locals want selfies with the players.

5) Do you know how amazing it was to talk football for 15 minutes with Tom Osborne, one of the greatest football coaches of all-time? Thanks to our colleagues at Nebraska Athletic Communications for setting that up for our pre-game show  ... and everything else, for that matter... Click here if you want to listen to it in its entirety.

Now for the regular stuff.

1) In addition to now being just one Hawaiian shirt away from becoming the next Gabriel Iglesias, Hernandez is now just the fourth Wildcats kicker in program history to reach 200 points, joining Danny Mathis (201), Manny Manolas (231) and Jesus Cortez (255). With 221 points, he could pass Manolas by the end of the season.

1a) The Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football start-up league have been scouting our games. Four words: Give Hernandez a try-out. Steve Spurrier's team doesn't have ANY former Wildcats on its preseason roster. Correct that, Mr. Ballcoach.

2) Steffon Francois' 54-yard catch and run in the first quarter was pretty nice, wasn't it? That's what he does best.

3) Tydarius Peters and Marquis Hendrix getting those back-to-back sacks was a fun defensive series.

4) Peters also had a pick, along with Donald Johnson IV.

5) Did you see the jets on that Nebraska guy who made the punt return?  Oh, yeah, the Big Ten's nothing but smash mouth, between the tackles football. Riiiight.

6) We rushed for more yards (141) on Nebraska than Northwestern and Colorado combined. Yeah, yeah, we know. We also scored more points against Miami than Notre Dame last year. It's just fun to say.

7) Good call we made to send photographer Romeo Guzman to capture a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Here's his photo gallery. Also, young Nolan Alexander did some quality journalism on his Hernandez piece.

8) Just to clear up things, this wasn't our first trip to Nebraska. Men's basketball played there in 2003 while Robert O'Neal took the bowling team to Lincoln in 2011 for the Big Red Invitational, finished ninth of 10 teams and beat Minnesota State for its lone Baker victory. O'Neal can't remember if they had runzas, though.

Meanwhile, back on campus…

1) Your volleyball team is on the verge of its first overall winning season since 2004 and its third Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division #1 seed in four years. The big match is at Florida A&M Friday night. As always.

2) Props to Carlin Berryhill and Men's Cross Country. Berryhill became the first Wildcat to win the men's MEAC individual championship, and Daniel Kiptoo and Xavier Walton were also top ten. If cross country were scored by top three finishes instead of top five, BCU would have won the MEAC and three other meets this fall. Not bad.

3) Want proof that God has not forsaken us? There's a Zaxby's now open in Ormond Beach. Bethune Grill and Zaxby's in the same area. Joyous.

4) Bold prediction: A future ATP men's pro played at our Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational this weekend. ASA Miami's guys were that good.

5) Remember that scene in Die Hard when John McClane and Sgt. Al Powell finally meet in person after only talking on the radio for the whole Nakatomi Plaza incident? Getting to see @bcuvolleyball parents during Senior Weekend after interacting on twitter all season is the same feeling.

One more thank you to everyone in Nebraska for a great experience.
