Cats finish weekend 3-2 at Citrus Blossom Invite

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Brianna Sanders was 3-for-4 at the plate while Destiny Enriquez collected the win in the pitcher's circle to help propel Bethune-Cookman to a 9-5 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon at the Disney Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invite inside the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Bethune-Cookman (5-5) scored seven runs across the fourth through seventh innings, respectfully, en route to the come from behind win.

UNI (9-2) led 4-2 after three innings in the books.

Wildcats second baseman Brianna Sanders kicked off the fourth inning with a single through the left side, followed by senior first baseman Iesha Waters reaching on an error charged to the Panthers infield, also moving Sanders to third on the play. After Waters stole second to move both Wildcats into scoring position, freshman Alexis Bermudez registered her first double of the year to plate both BCU runners and knot the game at 4-all.

Sasha Killings, pinch running for Bermudez at second, would come around to score off the end of a Marian Davis RBI ground out, putting the Wildcats head at 5-4.

The BCU advantage would grow to 6-4 in the top of the fifth after Waters drove in Kayla Traylor with a single to shallow left.

The Wildcats, looking for their third win of the weekend, plated two insurance runs in the top-half of the sixth inning.

Left fielder Cheyenne Smith began the BCU at-bat being hit by a pitch, and it was sophomore shortstop Jacki Smith drawing a base on balls before sophomore right fielder Ryan Jackson single to load the bases with only one out. That set the stage for Sanders to pick up two RBIs with a double to the wall in left, bringing around both Smiths for the scores.

The Cats would tack on another run in the seventh as Cheyenne Smith scored on the fourth error of the afternoon by the Panthers, this one a fielding error by third baseman Jenny Kohl.

Bethune-Cookman took a 9-4 lead into the home-half of the seventh inning.

UNI second baseman Claire Dudek's single right back up the middle past the glove of pitcher BCU pitcher Destiny Enriquez scored Jaclyn Spencer to produce the final 9-5 score line.

The win went to Enriquez in the circle as she came out of the bullpen to throw 4.2 innings, giving up just one run on five hits scattered, a walk and collecting a team-best four strikeouts. With the win, she improved her record out to 2-3 on the campaign.

It was Panthers' starter Jaclyn Spencer accepting the loss in accepting her first defeat of the campaign, moving her to 4-1 on the young season. She went five innings, giving up six runs (two earned) on nine hits and fanning five batters.

Sanders was the big producer at the plate for the Wildcats with a 3-for-4 effort and adding a pair of runs driven in. She would score two runs as well. Meanwhile, teammates Davis and Jackson added two hits apiece. And it was Bermudez recording two RBIs of her own in a 1-for-3 showing at the dish.

Bethune-Cookman trailed 1-0 after the first inning.

In the top of the second, Sanders reached on a strike out/wild pitch, followed by Waters getting on safely with an error charged to the UNI pitcher Spencer. The Wildcats would grab the 2-1 lead when both Sanders and Waters scored unearned off the end of the second errant throw of the frame by the Panthers' hurler Spencer.

Bethune-Cookman gets back to action next weekend when the Wildcats "return home" to California for the annual Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs. The Wildcats will face some of the nation's best in the form of No. 9/10 Tennessee, Oregon State, Long Beach State, No. 3/3 Missouri and San Diego State. The Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic begins Thursday, Feb. 22.
