Defense Pushes @BCUWBB Past CSU And To Sole Possession Of MEAC Lead

Golden, Brown each score 17

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Angel Golden and Chasimmie Brown each scored 17 points as Bethune-Cookman defeated Coppin State 64-38 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon in Historic Moore Gymnasium.

Combined with North Carolina A&T's 63-51 loss to Hampton, the Lady Wildcats' eighth straight victory gave sole possession of first place in the MEAC. Bethune-Cookman (16-4,8-0) has now won 18 consecutive league regular season games dating back to last season.

Golden scored 11 second- quarter points as the Lady Wildcats held the Eagles (6-16,5-5) to 2-15 shooting from the field to turn a 10-8 lead after the first quarter to a 33-14 halftime lead. Bethune-Cookman led by as many as 29 in the fourth quarter.

Brown reached double-figure scoring for the fifth consecutive game  and posted her sixth double-double of the season with a team-best 10 boards as the Lady Wildcats outrebounded the Eagles 44-37.

Ashanti Hunt posted a stat line of eight points, six rebounds, five rebounds and four steals to key a defensive effort that limited Genesis Lucas, the league's leading scorer, to five points on 2-11 shooting. Lucas entered the game averaging 17.7 points a contest.

Freshman Amaya Scott finished with nine points and eight rebounds, Kanesha Battle scored seven and Emily Williams had five rebounds and five assists with her two points.

Maraiyah Scott led Coppin State with nine. Chance Graham, the MEAC's leading rebounder, did snag 17 boards but was held to one field goal and six points.

HEAD COACH VANESSA BLAIR-LEWIS

"The whole game plan today was to make sure Lucas and Graham didn't go off. They are two good players. Once we shut them down, we had our way everywhere else."

"We focused in on defense in the second quarter. Our defense generated a lot of offense."

"Chas dominated the paint both offensive and defensive. She had shots and knocked them down. She was a complete post player."

"Every time Ashanti has guarded Lucas, she's had a bad night. Tonight we had two players to worry about, but we stuck to the scouting report.

ANGEL GOLDEN

"I just tried to get hot. Defensively, I just stayed focus. We were working on that the whole week

CHASIMMIE BROWN
"Like Coach said, our defense created our offense."

ASHANTI HUNT

"I had to stay hooked to her [Lucas] hip, honestly … It's my job and I take it seriously."

NOTES: Coppin State's 38 points were the fewest for a B-CU opponent this season and the fewest for any Lady Wildcat opponent since Savannah State (31) last year ... This was B-CU's largest margin of victory in MEAC play since a 61-33 win at Maryland-Eastern Shore last year ... This was the fourth time this season and third in MEAC play B-CU has held an opponent to one 3FG... Coppin State's 25.9 FG% was the lowest for a B-CU opponent this season ... Scott matched her career-high with eight rebounds.
