Final Stats
Daytona Beach, Fla. -
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats completed their three-game sweep of Savannah State on Sunday by a score of 10-0 at the Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Tigers of Savannah State (0-3) came into the weekend with just nine (9) players ... the minimum amount needed to field a "complete" team in softball. On the other hand, the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman had just 11 to their favor.
B-CC (3-0) poured on five runs in the first inning off SSU pitcher Krystal Palmer who went the entire weekend in the pitcher's circle for the Tigers.
Following back-to-back walks, junior left fielder Christina Trimble loaded up the bases with a single to left field. Junior first baseman Brandi Holley immediately stepped up and plated two runs as she connected on a 2-2 single to right field that scored Trimble and Andrea Thomas scored for the `Cats as well as she came in from first base on an error by the SSU infield--one of five (5) errors by the Tigers on the day.
After scoring one more run in the second inning, B-CC would put up the necessary amount of "run rule" runs on the board in the fourth frame as they scored four times for the eventual 10-0 final score.
Junior transfer pitcher Jessica Hurtado reached base safely for the first time this season on an error by the SSU infield, followed up by a single from Bussey shot back up the middle on a screamer. The bases then became loaded once again for the Wildcats when Trimble singled as well.
Brandi Holley stepped up and was called out on the infield fly rule, but Hurtado would come in to score on the play as the SSU third baseman dropped the "major league" pop-up in the infield. Another dropped fly ball by the outfield allowed Trimble and Bussey to score on the next play, followed by an RBI single from Andrea Thomas.
As the Tigers went "1-2-3" in the top-half of the fifth, the game was called for a five inning, 10-run rule for the third consecutive game in back-to-back days of the series.
The win was credited to freshman Lanaya Jenkins to improve her record to 2-0 on the year, though she was pulled after two innings in the pitcher's circle for B-CC. Hurtado finished it off for B-CC, while the loss was tacked onto SSU's Palmer for the third straight game to drop her record to 0-2 on the campaign.
Three Wildcats collected a multi-hit game on the afternoon, headed up by Bussey's 2-for-2 performance at the plat while scoring twice and driving in one run. Trimble and Ariel Robinson each collected two hits, respectively, as well.
The Tigers of Savannah State collected just two hits on the day with Jazmine Reynolds and left fielder Brittney Henderson grabbing the statistics at the plate.
