Daytona Beach, Fla. -
Bethune-Cookman College softball got on to the winning tarck in the right way on Saturday as the Wildcats swept a doubleheader of Savannah State University by scores of 11-0 and 13-0 at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Chris Cochran era of Wildcats softball kicked off to a great start on Saturday. The pitching was superb and the hitting was spectacular as the `Cats shutout the Tigers in back-to-back five-inning, run rule games.
Third baseman Breanna Shaw was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored in the first game. In the process, Shaw collected her first-ever homerun in the third inning with a solo blast to left field.
B-CC (2-0) jumped on top early in the first frame when Shaw's double to left field plated Ariel Robinson after starting off the 2007 campaign with a walk and back-to-back stolen bases off SSU (0-2) pitcher Krystal Palmer. That was followed up with a sacrifice fly to right field by senior Shaterra Davis that scored shortstop Holly Bussey.
B-CC led 4-0 after one inning of play away.
The Wildcats added seven more runs in the next three frames to close-out the 11-0 win in the first game of the doubleheader.
Freshman Trashonda Coven added an RBI single in the fourth inning as she scored catcher Andrea Thomas on the play. Thomas reached safely earlier in the inning with a triple.
The bats were awaked by Shaw, as well as Bussey going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Robinson also pitched in with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two runs scored.
Freshman pitcher Lanaya Jenkins earned the win in her collegiate debut with the Wildcats as she registered all five innings in the pitcher's circle. She allowed just one (1) hit in the game and struckout three Tigers batters.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats went with junior transfer Jessica Hurtado on the mound as she set the pace with her arm for the game.
The `Cats failed to score in the first inning, but then found a way to get to Palmer as she went the entire way in both games for the Tigers of Savannah State.
In the second inning, the `Cats tacked on 12 runs for the go-ahead lead. It was the most runs scored in an inning for B-CC since last year's eight runs in back-to-back games in the home debut of a series with Alabama State University (Feb. 18, 2006).
Ariel Robinson. Shaterra Davis added a two-run triple down the left field line later in the inning that allowed Bussey and Christina Trimble to score on the play. Bussey later came up to bat again to score a two-run double that plated Shaw and Robinson for the 12-0 advantage at the end of the second inning.
The Wildcats had just one run in the third inning when Thomas' double to left center--her second of the day, scored Davis for the 13-0 final score in favor of Bethune-Cookman.
Helping out in the win for game number two was three (3) costly errors for the Tigers, including a dropped fly that allowed three runs to score later on what would have been the third and final out of the second inning.
B-CC's Jessica Hurtado (1-0), in her Wildcat debut, collected five innings in the pitcher's circle while giving out just one hit and fanning five batters. And, just to add to that, Hurtado didn't allow a single walk of a Tiger batter. The loss was tacked onto Palmer to move her record to 0-2 on the year.
Brandi Holley, in her first games with the Wildcats after transferring from nearby Daytona Beach Community College, went 1-for-1 at the plate with two walks and an RBI and one run scored.
The Wildcats will now get ready for their next contest tomorrow afternoon right back at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla. Once there, Bethune-Cookman will battle against Savannah State in the last game of a three-game stretch.
