The Stetson Hatters outlasted the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Wednesday evening with a 6-5 decision at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Bethune-Cookman (13-23) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when a throwing error by the Stetson infield allowed Breanna Shaw to score from third base, and Holley Bussey to advance to second base. Shaw made her way into scoring position with a double earlier in the inning.
The Hatters of Stetson (27-12) put up a two-spot in the top-half of the second inning to take the lead, 2-1.
Following a single from shortstop Lindsay Wightman, back-to-back errors from the B-CU infield allowed her to move into scoring position ... as well as twp other batters to load up the bases.
That's when B-CU pitcher Lanaya Jenkins allowed Amanda Lindsey to walk in order to bring in Wightman for the easy RBI. A wild pitch two batters later moved third baseman Carolina Rojas across the plate for the go-ahead score.
Two more runs in the fourth inning pushed the Hatters lead out to 4-1.
Katie Lawrence singled and advanced courtesy a sacrifice bunt at the start of the inning. A fielding error by the B-CU defense on batter Amy Joyce allowed Lawrence to cross for the first score of the inning. Leadoff hitter Sherrel Fountain lined a single to left field that plated Joyce for the three-run Hatters advantage.
The Wildcats cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning as junior first baseman Brandi Holley scored her second homerun of the year with a solo shot to right center that cut the lead down to 4-2.
B-CU tied the game up in the sixth frame as Breanna Shaw started things off again with a single, and Holley Bussey was hit by the ensuing pitch. The day's big hitter, Holley, stepped to the plate two batters later and collected a two-run scoring single to right that plated both Shaw and Bussey.
With the score sitting tied at 4-4, the Hatters made a huge move in the top-half of the seventh inning with a two-run mark that ended up being just enough for the eventual win.
Nicole Forbes singled to left center, and teammate Andrea Migliori singled down the line to score Forbes. Migliori then stole third base before being plated by Wightman on a ground-out.
B-CU made a run at the lead in the home-half of the inning.
A furious two-out rally started with Breanna Shaw toed the dish and delivered an RBI single to left that cut the advantage down to 6-5.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to move Shaw across, and that ended the contest at 6-5.
SU's Erica Demers picked up her second win of the year against the `Cats, moving her overall record to 11-3. Jenkins collected the loss to drop her record to 7-17 for the 2007 campaign.
The big hitters for the Hatters included eight (8) batters with a one-hit affair, led by Fountain and Migliori with a RBI on a hit a piece.
As for Bethune-Cookman, it was Shaw leading the way at the dish with a sizzling 3-for-4 mark, including two runs and a RBI. Also hitting high was Brandi Holley with a 2-for-3 mark that includes one run and three RBI.
Bethune-Cookman gets back to the diamond on Tuesday, Apr. 3 when they play host to Savannah State at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla.
