Daytona Beach, Fla. -
Bethune-Cookman University pitcher Lanaya Jenkins threw her first career no-hitter on Tuesday, helping the Wildcats to a doubleheader sweep of Savannah State University at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla. B-CU took the first game 24-1, and then shutout the nightcap with an 8-0 advantage.
B-CU freshman pitcher Lanaya Jenkins was the talk of the day in the second game of the day's doubleheader with her first collegiate no-hitter thrown.
B-CU (15-23) led 2-0 after two innings of play until they burst open the flood gates for a three-run third frame.
B-CU freshman outfielder Trashonda Coven singled home Christina Trimble. Catcher Andrea Thomas collected a sacrifice fly RBI one batter later when she flied out to deep centerfield, allowing Shaterra Davis. Davis reached earlier in the inning on a walk from SSU pitcher Keisha Barkley.
Ariel Robinson rounded out the scoring in the inning for the Wildcats with a run-scoring double to left field that crossed Davis for the 5-0 B-CU lead.
B-CU scored five more runs for the 10-0 final score in the fourth frame, highlighted by first baseman Brandi Holley's RBI double to left center that plated Trimble from second base.
But it was B-CU's Jenkins that continued to burn the SSU (1-22) bats in the nightcap, sitting down her first 13 batters faced before hitting a batter and allowing a base-on-balls in the top-half of the fifth inning. B-CU collected the final two outs on strikeouts from Jenkins ... one of six (6) in the second game.
Jenkins collected both wins for the Wildcats on the day, improving her record for the year out to 10-17. SSU pitcher Keisha Barkley took both losses to drop her record to 0-4 for the season.
B-CU jumped on the Wildcats 24-1 in the first game, while Jenkins allowed one run on three hits and seven strikeouts.
The day was capped off by the Wildcats' hitting power as Trashonda Coven each chipped in with four RBI as well.
B-CU out-hit the Lady Tigers today by a count of 29-3, while collecting 17 hits in the first game of the day.
For the Lady Tigers of Savannah State, it was Jessalyn Ross, Barkley and Danielle Williams each combining for the three (3) hits allowed on the day by the `Cats pitching staff ... Lanaya Jenkins. And it was the coaching efforts of their head coach [Henry Banks] dedication and love for the players that kept them fighting until the end.
B-CU has now won all seven games of the year against Savannah State, with each game being a five-inning affair.
The Wildcats travel north this weekend when they take on conference foe Norfolk State University on Saturday, Apr. 7 at 1 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
