Women's Tennis Shutout in Season-Opener to USF, 4-0

Jan. 20, 2008

Results

Daytona Beach, Fla. - The season didn't start off on the right path for the Bethune-Cookman University women's tennis team on Sunday as they fell in a rare doubleheader, 4-0 to the University of South Florida at the City Island Tennis Complex in Daytona Beach, Fla.

After having to cancel the men's affair, and move the women's matches to a doubleheader today, the B-CU women's tennis team needed to prepare both mentally and physically for the season-opener against two very powerful intrastate foes. Heavy rain and severe weather had been surrounding the Daytona Beach area for the past two days, and there was plenty of it to go around today as well.

The doubles matches against USF (3-0) were scheduled to be played following the singles matches, but did not have to be played due to USF taking the singles matches, 4-0.

Bethune-Cookman (0-1) was limited to just four (4) game victories in the match as the Bulls swept each set.

B-CU newcomer Andrea Paez fell 6-0, 6-0 to Liz Cruz at the No. 2 position, and the Wildcats' Shaunda Gaiter fell at the No. 4 position to Iciri Rai on scores of 6-0, 6-1.

USF took the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively, as Chanetra Brown and freshman Reijina Hopkins each were defeated. Brown, however, did collect a game in a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Natalia Guevara.

Junior Monika Musilova was stuck in a great match against Allyn Mueller as she fell in the first set (6-2), but led 1-0 in the second set before the match was suspended due to USF having the necessary points for the victory.

Bethune-Cookman will now host the second-half of the Sunday doubleheader when they take on North Florida at 3 p.m. back at the City Island Tennis Complex in Daytona Beach. For more information, please continue to stay posted to the B-CU athletic website at www.BCCathletics.com.

USF will take on North Florida later in the evening after the Wildcats and Ospreys tangle at City Island Tennis Complex.
