WILDCATS LOSE IN OVERTIME AT STETSON 64-58
The teams were tied at halftime 25-25 and B-CU had a 47-41 lead with five minutes remaining in regulation. Stetson (1-1) tied the game at 51 to force the overtime and then Kris Thomas scored the first seven points in OT and the Hatters held on down the stretch in OT for the six point home win.
B-CU freshman guard Clifford Reed led both teams in scoring with 20 points. Junior Jarrell Thomas contributed 16 points and senior John Holmes had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (now 1-1 on the 2008-2009 season).
Bethune-Cookman University Head Coach Reed's comments following the game:
"The effort was great, but the execution in the last five minutes was not very good. We did not defend well enough. We have some games we play in practice where you have to win on defense, and if we had stopped them from scoring tonight, we would have won. That's the most important thing."
"We made some errors, and I think our youth showed up a little bit, and Stetson did a great job of making plays."
"A lot of them were mental mistakes. We gave up two lay-ups when we were playing just straight man-to-man. As we go we'll work harder and correct those errors."
"You can learn from all situations, it is just a matter if we go back and apply it to practice. You Work much harder in practice in the end of the game situations, and then you see the improvement."
