Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score
Daytona Beach, Fla. -
Bethune-Cookman University softball used a big hit from Brandi Holley to collect a doubleheader split with visiting Cornell University on Thursday afternoon at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla. Cornell won the opening contest, 4-0 before B-CU took the nightcap, 3-2.
Cornell (12-5) plated runs in each of the second and third innings in the opening game to step out to a 2-0 advantage right off the top. Cornell first baseman Ashley Garvey collected an RBI double in the second while teammate Ashley Wolf singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the third.
The final blow came via a Wolf RBI single shot back up the middle to cross Ali Tomlinson who reached on an error earlier in the frame. That brought the score to the final of 4-0 in favor of the Big Red.
Cornell's Tomlinson collected the win in relief effort of starter Jenn Meunier. Tomlinson went four innings in the pitcher's circle allowing just one (1) hit in the contest while striking out one batter. The one hit allowed equaled B-CU's total for the game in that department.
The loss went to B-CU freshman Taryn Hernandez who dropped to 1-6 on the season.
B-CU's one hit came from Ashton Hinds with a double to center field.
In the second game, B-CU (6-25) took the lead early with a run in the second inning.
Brittani Austin led off the inning with a double, while she would later be plated on a sacrifice bunt from Anush Mooradian that led to an error charged to the Cornell infield.
With B-CU leading 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Big Red used an Alyson Intihar single and a B-CU error to push across Samantha Hare for the tying run at 1-1 in the top-half of the inning. Cornell later took the lead in the fifth inning when Garvey double down the left field line and came in to score on the play with an error and blazing speed from the appointed designated player for the Big Red.
In the bottom-half of the inning, B-CU used the bat of Hinds to get herself on base, followed by a two-run homerun from senior first baseman Brandi Holley to put B-CU in front for good at 3-2. For Holley it was her second homerun in as many days, and her team-leading fifth of the campaign.
The win went to B-CU freshman Allison Garcia who upped her record to 5-14 as she went all seven innings in the circle, spreading out six hits and two unearned runs. The loss was tagged to Cornell's Elizabeth Dalrymple who went the entire way with three runs (two earned) allowed on seven hits. Of note, neither pitcher registered a strikeout in the contest as both teams showed great plate awareness and bat control.
The `Cats have a much-needed week of rest upcoming before taking on Canisius next Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach. For more information, please log on to the B-CU athletic website at www.BCCathletics.com.
