Bethune-Cookman University junior tennis player Monika Musilova has been selected to the 2008 All-MEAC Women's Tennis Team announced late Thursday night at the MEAC Championships in Raleigh, N.C.
Musilova, a 6-foot-0 junior from Prague, Czech Republic, is making her first appearance on the All-MEAC First Team. This season, she led the Wildcats in almost every category, including service aces and break points.
She finished the regular season with a record of 15-11 overall, but a 3-1 mark in league play. Her only loss came in a match against MEAC regular season champion South Carolina State. Musilova held a 6-4 record in tournament play, as well as a 9-7 record at the No. 1 singles position. In doubles play, she played mainly alongside teammate Andrea Paez at the No. 1 position where the two combined for a record of 4-11.
Hampton sophomore Na-Hyun Baek and Norfolk State junior Miroslav Vleck were named the 2008 MEAC Men and Women's Tennis Players of the Year, as voted by the leagues' head tennis coaches and sports information directors.
Baek tallied a 13-3 overall mark including an 11-1 record at the number one singles position. She finished the regular season on an eight match win streak including an undefeated 5-0 mark in northern divisional play.
South Carolina State head coach Hardeep Judge earned Women's Coach of the Year accolades. The honor is the third on the women's side for Judge, who also earned Men's Coach of the Year accolades in 2005 and 2007. This season under Judge's guidance, the Lady Bulldogs posted a 4-0 record in the southern division and a 10-3 record overall. The Lady Bulldogs have gone undefeated in conference play four consecutive years.
Alexis McCoy of Morgan State was named Rookie of the Year for the women, while Gabriel Meana of South Carolina State earned the honor for the men. McCoy posted a 2-0 mark in the northern divisional and was 8-2 overall. Meana tallied a 13-2 record at the number four singles position and a 14-3 record overall, including a 3-0 southern divisional mark.
Joining Baek and McCoy on the 2008 Women's All-MEAC Tennis First-Team are Morgan State teammates Walaa Elsir and Viktoriya Lukynenko and South Carolina State's Marcela Rodeno completed the first-team. Of course, Musilova was added to the list as well for the Maroon and Gold.
