UCF Trips Up Wildcats in Softball Thriller, 2-1

April 8, 2008

Box Score

Orlando, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman was just a run short on Tuesday evening as they slipped in a 2-1 setback at UCF at the UCF Softball Complex in Orlando, Fla.

Bethune-Cookman (12-29) hung right in there from start to finish with the Golden Knights of UCF, who received other votes this week in the Top 25 poll.

UCF (33-15) scored two runs in the third inning when leadoff hitter Tiffany Lane singled up the middle and later maneuvered into scoring position when she stole second and then third base off B-CU starting pitcher Chastity Sanders. Lane would come in to score with the help of a RBI single from Breanne Javier. Teammate Lexi Gresham would later plate right fielder Marquita Council with a RBI ground-out to short.

UCF led 2-0 after three innings of play.

The Wildcats scored their lone run in the top-half of the fourth with a RBI single to right from freshman Anush Mooradian to score Holly Bussey from second base. B-CU left two players stranded in the inning with back-to-back outs.

The win went to UCF's Ashleigh Cole who improved her record to 12-6 on the year, while B-CU's Sanders stayed winless at 0-7.

The Wildcats were led on the day by MEAC Player of the Week Allison Garcia who collected two of Bethune-Cookman's four hits in the contest. Garcia was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Mooradian and catcher Liz Parrish collected the other hits, respectively.

UCF got multiple hits from both Javier and Ashley Van Ryn who combined for four of the Golden Knights' seven hits off freshman Sanders.

Sanders did look good in the loss for the Wildcats as she allowed just seven hits with two earned runs and just one walk allowed in six complete frames on the rubber.

The `Cats are back in action tomorrow in a doubleheader affair at Sunnyland Park when they take on the University of North Florida beginning at 2 p.m. Admission is, as always, absolutely free to the public. For more information, please call the B-CU Office of Sports Information at (386) 481-2206.
