FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Lady Spartans of Michigan State came out firing in the opening game of the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Break Invitational this afternoon, putting the Lady Wildcats in an early hole. Aside from the first inning, B-CU did a good job of keeping MSU in check, but were unable to make up the difference from the opening inning, falling to MSU 10-2. However, B-CU bounced back in the second game, as a late-game two-shot home run pushed them over the top in a 3-2 victory over Fairfield.

Game One

In the tournament opener, Michigan State got off to a strong start in this afternoon's game, collecting seven hits in the top of the first inning, which translated to five runs scored for the Lady Spartans, and putting the Lady Wildcats in a 6-0 hole after being held scoreless in the first two innings.

However, in the bottom of the third, the Lady Wildcats put in some offense of their own, adding three hits and putting two tallies on the board to make the score 6-2.

Although B-CU went on to play excellent defense for the remainder of the game, only allowing four runs in the remaining innings, the Lady Wildcats were held scoreless through the end of the game, solidifying the MSU win 10-2.

Leading the Lady Wildcats at the plate was Allison Garcia, who notched two hits in three at-bats, and earned one RBI. Cesley Tafoya (.256 this season) also had one hit, on which she batted in a run as well.

Allison Garcia (1-5) started and finished the game at pitcher, collecting three strikeouts in the game.

Game Two

In Game Two of the day, the Lady Wildcats kept the Lady Stags of Fairfield University down most of the game and a late-game rally put B-CU over the top with a comeback win 3-2.

After holding B-CU scoreless in the top of the first, Fairfield put two tallies on the board in the bottom of the first, but thanks two strong defense by the Lady Wildcats, that was the only offensive output they would have all game.

The score stood at 2-0 in favor of Fairfield for two more innings until the Lady Wildcats struck in the top of the third, as a short hit by Liz Parrish pushed Cesley Tafoya in from third to get B-CU on the board. The Lady Wildcats held Fairfield for the inning, and held onto that strong defensive stand to the end of the game.

Still down 2-1 in the top of the sixth, B-CU remained composed and responded, taking a 3-2 lead as Allison Garcia fired a home run down the infield line, batting in both herself and Simone Ceasar. From there, the Lady Wildcats held strong with great defense to keep Fairfield locked down and finish the game with a 3-2 win.

Allison Garcia (.294 this season) again led the charge for the Lady Wildcats, collecting two hits in three at-bats, including the lead-grabbing home run that also earned her two RBIs. Liz Parrish (.086 this season) also had one RBI in the game.

Chastity Sanders (2-4) took over pitching duties in Game Two of the double-header and finished the game with one strikeout, while only allowing one Earned Run.

Today's results move the Lady Wildcats to 1-1 in the tournament and 3-9 in the 2009 season. The Spring Break Invitational continues tomorrow for the Lady Wildcats, as they rematch with Fairfield at 1:00 p.m., then face tournament host, Florida Gulf Coast, at 5:00 p.m. Stay tuned to www.BCCathletics.com for further updates on the tournament.
