DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In today's nail biter at Sunnyland Park, the momentum never got going for either team in regulation, as each put runners in scoring position, only to be shut down with no runs. The defensive struggle went on for a full seven innings, as regulation play ended in a 0-0 tie. The Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa, however, took advantage of opportunities in the extra inning, getting hot and scoring three runs in the eighth inning, to take a lead and come out on top after shutting down the Lady Wildcats, winning 3-0.
The Lady Wildcats played an extremely tough defensive game this afternoon at their home park, only allowing five hits in seven innings, allowing no scores and stranding three Hawkeyes on base. Unfortunately B-CU got the same treatment from Iowa, only collecting two hits in regulation play. The score remained gridlocked into extra innings at 0-0.
In the eighth and final inning, the Lady Wildcats appeared to be on the same track. Although Iowa got runners on base, Iowa only put one score in before getting two quick outs, looking like the Wildcats would have a solid opportunity to tie or win. However, two scores on fielding errors pushed the Hawkeye lead out further, grabbing a 3-0 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, B-CU had opportunities and had two runners on base, but the Hawkeyes shut them down without allowing a score and finalized the 3-0 win.
Brittani Austin (.026) each had one hit apiece in today's game with Iowa. Allison Garcia (5-17) again started and finished on the mound for B-CU, pitching an outstanding game despite the late runs. Garcia collected an exceptional nine strikeouts on one Earned Run, making her season ERA 4.30.
The Lady Wildcats (7-26) have faced a tough non-conference schedule and played extremely well early in the season, but it has not always translated into wins. The Lady Wildcats are optimistic heading into the MEAC conference season. For now, the Lady Wildcats get a short break from their hectic schedule before returning home on March 28-29 for the conference home opener against Norfolk State (11-11).
