DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - One inning made all the difference in the world today as the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman Softball hosted the Knights of the University of Central Florida. The game played out as a defensive struggle for the majority of the innings, but the Knights got hot in the top of the fifth to distance themselves, sealing the game off in the seventh to win 3-0.
The Wildcats played strong defense through the first four innings, only allowing three hits and stranding six Knights on base. However, in the top of the fifth, two consecutive at-bats led to runs for UCF, giving the Knights a 2-0 lead. B-CU couldn't seem to generate any offense, only collecting two hits against strong pitching from UCF, going scoreless through the game. UCF finished off the game, adding another run in the top of the seventh, and taking the 3-0 lead that would close the game.
B-CU's hitting came from Sabrina Ferguson (.271) and Briana Leverett (.180), who each finished with one hit apiece. Simone Ceasar played well on defense, leading the team with three put-outs and three assists.
Allison Garcia (11-20) started and finished the game on the mound for the Wildcats, earning two strikeouts while allowing three Earned Runs, moving her season ERA to 3.47.
The Wildcats (15-29) resume conference play over the weekend as conference rival Florida A&M (6-0) travels to Sunnyland Park for a three-game MEAC showdown. Games with FAMU on April 25 begin at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The closing game on April 26 begins at 12:00 pm.
