DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Wildcat fans hoping for an offensive battle in today's game with Jacksonville University definitely did not receive it. The exact opposite unfolded instead, as a defensively-fueled game took place between the Dolphins and Wildcats. Only one run was scored in the game that featured twelve combined strikeouts and only eight total hits. A midgame score by the Dolphins, coupled with solid field play by both teams ended the game in a 1-0 loss for the Wildcats in their final regular season home game.
Prior to the game, B-CU Softball took time to celebrate their lone senior, Left Fielder Ashley Taylor, who has played the position in all 48 games this season.
While Jacksonville got runners on base early in the game, the Wildcats consistently shut them down, stranding six Dolphins on base in the first four innings. However, in the top of the fourth, an error on the play allowed a quick runner to score from Second Base for the only run of the game. Despite the breakdown on the play, the Wildcats went right back into strong defense and held them scoreless for the remainder of the game, maintaining position to tie until the final batter.
Four Wildcats finished with four batters having hits. Ashley Taylor (.262) each finished with one hit apiece. Leading in defense, Brittani Austin finished with seven putouts, while Liz Parrish had six.
Pitching today's game, in her 34th start of the season, Allison Garcia (11-23) started and finished the battle with JU. Garcia collected six strikeouts with no Earned Runs, moving her season ERA to 3.35.
The Wildcats (15-33) head back out onto the road for the final time this season as they wrap up conference play in a series with North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. B-CU is looking to defend their current seeding in the upcoming MEAC Softball Championships in Ormond Beach, Fla.; currently ranked second in the Southern Division.
