MIAMI, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman Softball closed out the FIU Blue and Gold Felsberg Invitational, Sunday at the FIU Softball Complex. They've had an up-an-down weekend, with a blowout loss on the first day, only to bounce back on Saturday, splitting games with a rally win and a close, late-inning loss to the tournament host. In the final game for B-CU in this tournament, the Wildcats faced the Badgers of Wisconsin. The Wildcats never got going offensively, and largely held UW, if not for a huge offensive output in the fourth, which sent the Badgers to a 9-0 win in the fifth inning.
The Wildcats played effective defense early in the game, only allowing three hits in the first three innings, while stranding four Badgers on base. However, UW got hot in the bottom of the fourth, turning in seven hits, and tallying nine runs to take a significant lead. As UW held B-CU scoreless in the top of the fifth, the 9-0 win went final in favor of Wisconsin.
The Wildcats couldn't generate enough offense to get in a scoring position, only collecting three hits. Allison Garcia, and Tameika Jonas each had a single hit for the Wildcats. Defensively, first baseman Joanna Hernandez and catcher Sabrina Ferguson each tallied 5 putouts apiece to lead B-CU defensively.
Chastity Sanders started the game on the mound for the Wildcats, collecting 5 strikeouts. Late in the fourth inning, Allie Garcia relieved Sanders at pitcher, collecting three consecutive outs to close the inning. Sanders (0-4) took the loss for the game.
The Wildcats (2-7) return to action on Friday (Feb. 26), playing a bit closer to home, as they head to DeLand for the Stetson Hatter Classic, facing UAlbany, Stetson, and Boston College.
