JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In Wednesday's double-header with Jacksonville, the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman softball got off to a great start, claiming victory in the first game after a big seventh inning. Led by Ashton Hinds' 3-of-4 hitting and Cesley Tafoya's two hits and two RBI, the Wildcats won 5-3. Despite starting to role late in the first game, the Wildcats generated very little offense in the second game, with only two hits, to fall to the Dolphins, 2-0.
The Wildcats made the first strike early in the first inning, batting Ashton Hinds in from second as Cesley Tafoya hit an RBI single. B-CU wrapped up the inning with the early 2-0 lead over the Dolphins.
JU climbed on top after a two RBI third-inning with an outfield double and a ground-out sacrifice. While fending off the Wildcats, JU grabbed another run in the bottom of the fifth on a B-CU throwing error to take a 3-1 lead.
Although the Wildcats generated seven runs in the first six innings, the effort didn't translate into runs, but B-CU put it together in the seventh to take advantage of opportunities. Rallying from two runs down, the Wildcats turned two hits and two JU errors into a four-run inning. Michelle Banuelos-Smith reached on a fielding error and sent two more runs to the board, as Tafoya and Allison Garcia both crossed the place, to put B-CU on top 5-3. After holding JU to no hits, the Wildcats claimed the late-inning win.
Leading the Wildcats offense in game one, Allison Garcia (14-12) pitched the complete game, with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs.
Despite the strong game one finish, the Wildcats struggled to find offense in the second game. After collecting a hit on the leadoff batter, B-CU didn't collect another until the seventh inning, and just two for the game. Only FIU, in the seventh game, held B-CU to as few hits.
While the Wildcats were able to hold off the Dolphins' offense, stranding seven JU runners on base, the Dolphins scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead and hold on for the win.
Chastity Sanders (5-8) pitched her first game in 17 days, striking out 2 batters, walking none, and allowing 1 earned run.
The Wildcats (14-12) head out this weekend for a three-game series with Winston-Salem State on the road. Stay tuned to www.B-CUathletics.com for game recaps from Winston-Salem, N.C.
