DELAND - Ashton Hinds' two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh gave Bethune-Cookman a dramatic 13-12 victory over South Dakota State and a split of its Hatter Invitational games Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Kansas used six long balls to run-rule the Wildcats 17-7.
South Dakota State (0-5) used a five-run first and fourth to put the Wildcats into comeback mode. B-CU answered by scoring in every inning and holding SDSU to two runs in the final three innings.
Hinds capped a strong second game with the two-out single up that middle that scored Michelle Banuelos-Smith. Hinds posted 4 RBI in the game, had two hits and scored three runs.
Banuelos-Smith went 3-4, while Aurelia Gamch, Cesley Tafoya, Kelsey Rodney and Leverett each added two hits. B-CU took a 6-5 lead in the third when Hinds and Gamch drew bases-loaded walks, but South Dakota scored five in the fourth to regain the lead.
The third loss to Kansas this season saw the undefeated Jayhawks take a 9-0 lead before B-CU closed to 9-7 with three in the third and four in the fourth. B-CU had the bases loaded with one out before Kansas turned a double play to get out of the inning, then use back-to-back homers to regain momentum.
Rodney went 3-3 with 2 RBI for B-CU, while Allison Garcia drove in two runs.
B-CU (2-7) faces SDSU again Sunday at 10 a.m.
