DELAND, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman dropped a 5-2 decision to Valparaiso in the championship game of the Hatter Classic Sunday morning.
Valpo and Bethune-Cookman matched up in the title game by virtue of allowing the least runs through the first two days of tournament action, as all four teams went 2-2 over Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats (5-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Michelle Banuelos-Smith. But the Crusaders literally responded immediately in their half of the second, as KC Boldt and Tori Brown hit back-to-back homers for a 2-1 lead, then a Haley Bridwell RBI single made it 3-1.
Bethune-Cookman got a run back in the top of the third on an Aurelia Gamch solo homer, but couldn't score again.
For the tournament, Banuelos-Smith led the Wildcats with a .385 average with three 2B and three RBI while Cesley Tafoya hit .357 and Simone Ceasar .333.
