DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Though her team managed just three runs in being swept by USF Wednesday, Bethune-Cookman University softball coach Chris Cochran saw some improvement on offense in the Wildcats' 6-1 and 7-2 losses at Sunnyland Park.
"We got a little better," said Cochran, whose team posted 12 hits against the first place team from the Big East. "We had good at bats late in the game, we put runners on the base late in the game. "
USF (24-15) broke open a scoreless tie in the first game with a five-run fifth inning, then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on Stephanie Medina's three-run homer in the first.
B-CU got on the board when Ashton Hinds scored from second on Cesley Tafoya's infield single in the fifth, but could pull no closer.
Cesley Tafoya had three hits and Sabrina Ferguson two for B-CU in the opener.
Ferguson provided an early spark for the Wildcats in the second game when she launched a solo shot to left for her second homer of the season, cutting USF's lead to 3-1.
USF pulled away with a three-run fifth. B-CU's other run came in the seventh when Michelle Banuelos-Smith scored on Brianna Leverett's double.
B-CU (15-22) travels to Orangeburg, S.C. this weekend for a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division series with South Carolina State. The Wildcats currently lead the Bulldogs by a game.
