DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Chastity René Taylor scored a game-high 23
points and Amanda Hairston added 21 to help lead the homestanding Bethune-Cookman
Wildcats to a decisive 84-41 season-opening win over Trinity Baptist on Friday
night inside Moore Gymnasium.
B-CU
(1-0) got open looks all night by beating the Trinity Baptist (2-1) zone
defense. The Wildcats shot 48.6 percent from the field, while knocking down
34.8 percent of their shots from three-point range.
Defensively,
B-CU held its opponent to just 22.9 percent from the field without allowing a
single three-pointer. The Cats also held a commanding 23-0 scoring advantage in
fast break opportunities, as well as a 51-0 mark in bench points.
Behind
the play of Taylor and teammate KiKi Devane, Bethune-Cookman jumped out to an
early 12-0 lead before Trinity Baptist's Nicole Collins netted two of her
team-high 20 points to cut the deficit to 12-2 heading into the first media
timeout.
B-CU
eventually led 38-17 at the break and never looked back en route to the
non-conference victory.
In
the second half, the Cats continued their torrid scoring pace as Taylor added
14 points in the stanza, as well as Hairston registering 11. Terrenisha Hollis
controlled the boards with seven of her team-high 10 rebounds coming in the
second half.
Trinity
Baptist was led offensively by Collins with a double-double effort of 16
rebounds (10 defensive) going along with her team-high 20-point performance.
Tendye Gainous also touched double-figures scoring with 15 points, including
5-of-6 from the foul line.
B-CU
was paced by Taylor's 23 points and Hairston's 21, but it was Jasmine Evans
also providing a spark off the bench with 12 points, five rebounds and three
assists. Hairston also added nine rebounds (six offensive) off the bench.
Wildcats Head Coach Vanessa Blair took note to the amount of assists by her team, as
they recorded 17 on the night, including four from guard Shakeyia Colyer.
Bethune-Cookman
gets back on the court again Monday, Nov. 12 as they travel north to
Jacksonville in a game scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
