North Florida Holds Off Lady Wildcats, 56-55

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Taking on North Florida in an early game, Wednesday at UNF Arena, the Ospreys were able to keep the Lady Wildcats down just long enough to collect the 56-55 win before an announced attendance of 1,593.

Bethune-Cookman (2-4) spent the game battling back, after falling into a 10-0 hole to start the game. Chastity René Taylor got the Lady Wildcats on the board, hitting her first three-pointer, and Shakeyia Colyer drove the court and streaked down the lane to give B-CU a lead at 13:25, which they held just over two minutes.

Huge momentum swings in this game kept the outcome a question mark, but the Ospreys never surrendered their lead once it was regained in the first half.

The Lady Wildcats trailed 28-25 at half.

In the second half, B-CU's defense kept the pressure on the Ospreys, but UNF was able to slip through the lines and stay on top, including the most crucial shot in the game, as B-CU held UNF in the final minute, but with two ticks on the shot clock Jadhken Kerr slipped in a roller underneath the basket, after grabbing a loose ball with just over 10 seconds to go.

“We did a great job of playing defense for about 20 seconds, and for the last 10 seconds we just had breakdowns,” said Head Coach Vanessa Blair. “They really made some tough baskets with four and five seconds on the shot clock.”

On the other end, Taylor made it a one-point game with her fifth long-ranger of the day, but with 0.5 seconds on the clock, it just wasn't enough, as B-CU fell to 2-4 on the 56-55

Taylor led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including five three-pointers. She was the only Lady Wildcat to hit double figures, followed by Amanda Hairston with eight and Terrenisha Hollis with seven. Hairston led the team with seven rebounds, while Kayla Crawford had six.

The Lady Wildcats gave up a season-low 11 turnovers to the Ospreys, but struggled from the floor, hitting just 38 percent, forced to shoot from the perimeter in the second half against the UNF zone.

Bethune-Cookman returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Orlando to face the UCF Knights, who are 2-5 on the year with a 7 p.m. date vs. Charlotte tonight.
