Speller Heads B-CU Selections To All-MEAC Tennis

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman senior Shereen Peterson-Paul -- garnered berths on the All-MEAC second team while Juan Varon was named to the men's All-Conference second team.

After getting married and having a child in the off-season, Speller, a senior from Bronx, N.Y. compiled a 15-8 record in singles play and 16-5 in doubles with Peterson-Paul in 2012. Her career record was 28-29 in singles entering the season. It's the first B-CU first-team selection since Monika Musilova in 2009.

“It was Stacey's goal to go out on top this season,” said B-CU Head Coach Tim Pleasant. “She put in the extra effort to make this season her best one. She was consistent at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles and you're always going to have to strong competition at those spots. I'm extremely proud of her.”

Peterson-Paul, a junior from Ontario, Canada, compiled a team-best 18-6 mark in singles play, primarily at the No. 4 spot while Kajiwara, a freshman from Japan, was 13-8 in singles and 17-5 in doubles play.

Varon, a sophomore from Bogota, Colombia, was 11-8 in singles play and 12-12 in doubles for the Wildcat men this season.

In addition, eight B-CU tennis players -- four men and four women – were named MEAC All-Academic selections for posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 better. Victor Belucci,Kip Jackson Santiago Lobelo and Marc Misanovic represented the men's team while Nancy Gonzales, Peterson-Paul, Speller and Katarina Szaboova represent the women.

The women's team (20-6) opens its MEAC tournament schedule Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. against Howard in Raleigh, N.C. The men's team (13-13) faces Hampton at 12 noon.
