JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman broke into the win
column in grand fashion Saturday morning with a 4-3 victory over Ohio State at
the Jacksonville University Invitational before falling 2-1 to Stony Brook
later in the day.
Snapping a six-game skid with the last three games being
decided by a 39-1 margin, the Wildcats (1-7) got three hits from Shamaria
Engram to defeat the Big Ten Buckeyes that had posted an 11-0 decision over
B-CU the day before.
Simone Ceasar and Kelsey Rodney both scored a run and drove
in an run, while Shanel Tolbert scattered nine hits and struck out five to help
B-CU register its first victory over a Big Ten team since the 2009 squad downed Purdue 3-2.
“I was really proud how we came out and played,” said B-CU Head Coach Chris Cochran. “We had to play well and we earned a good victory. Shamaria gave us a lift and we had better at-bats up and down the line-up.”
Rodney gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the second when she
scored on an error, but Ohio State answered with a two-run double in the bottom
half of the inning for a 2-1 advantage.
In the next inning,
Calesha Shelley scored on a Simone Ceasar fielder's choice and Aurelia Gamch scored on a
Rodney single as the Wildcats regained the lead.
B-CU took a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Engram's third single
brought home Ceasar.
Ohio State closed to 4-3 in the sixth, but Tolbert kept the
Buckeyes at bay.
Against Stony Brook, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into the
seventh on Engram doubling home Melissa Berouty in the second, but the
Seawolves scored two runs in the final inning for the victory.
The Wildcat conclude the tournament Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
against host Jacksonville.
