Softball Falls To FAMU In Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman concluded its 2013 regular season Monday with a 12-4 loss to Florida A&M in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division game at Sunnyland Park.

The Wildcats (17-33 overall, 11-3 MEAC) led 3-1 after two innings, but the Rattlers (19-30,10-4) took control with a six-run third en route to their second win of the three-game series.

Bethune-Cookman had clinched the MEAC Southern Division and its No. 1 seed in this week's conference tournament with a 12-3 win on Sunday.

Kelsey Rodney and Sophia Ortega each had two hits and scored a run for the Wildcats. Leadoff hitter Calesha Shelley accounted for two runs while Aurelia Gamch and Melissa Berouty had a RBI.

Prior to the game, B-CU celebrated Senior Day and honored its four seniors – Michelle Banuelos-Smith, Simone Ceasar, Gamch and Joanna Hernandez.

B-CU will open tournament play Thursday as it vies for its fourth consecutive championships. Times and opponent will soon be announced.

NOTES: Freshman Sophia Ortega hit .750 (6-8) in the three-game series; She has hit safely in 7 straight games … Shelley has now reached base in 20 consecutive games.
