JONESBORO, Ga. -- The Bethune-Cookman women's tennis team won six of its eight singles matches Thursday at the HBCU National Championship.

Chinatsu Kajiwara, Gaby Chinchilla, Valentina Beresiarte, Laura Rodriguez, Mina Matsuba and Maria Sablina each claimed a straight-set win for the defending champion Wildcats.

Kajiwara, who won her flight at last year's tournament, and Chinchilla are the top two seeds in the "B" Flight.

Beresiarte and Rodriguez are competing in the "C" flight, while Sablina and Matsuba, seeded third, are in the "A" flight.

In the men's competition, Santiago Lobelo, Gilbert Rotich and Greg Almeida posted victories, as did two Wildcat doubles squads.

Both teams wore black and gold ribbons in honor of Juan Varon Munoz, the men's team member who died in a traffic accident Sunday evening.

"Everyone was nervous as first, worried if our emotions would get in the way," said B-CU Head Coach Tim Pleasant. "As the day went on, we used that emotion to play harder and the wins were confident wins."
