SAVANNAH, Ga. – Maurice Taylor matched his career-high of 15 points as Bethune-Cookman fell in overtime 70-60 to Savannah State Saturday night.
The Wildcats (2-18 overallm,0-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) took a 54-53 lead on two Clemmye Owens free throws with 42 seconds remaining. Savannah State tied it when Kierre Richards made a free throw with 12 seconds to play.
Richards scored five of his 17 points in overtime, including a 3-pointer to open the period to give Savannah State a 57-54 lead, and the Tigers (6-12, 4-0) lead the rest of the way.
Taylor, who was 9-11 from the line, led four Wildcats in double figures. Mikel Trapp and Tony Kynard each scored 11, while Owens added 10.
Trapp hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 36 seconds of the first half to give the Wildcats a 25-20 halftime lead. B-CU held SSU to 7-24 shooting from the field in the opening period.
B-CU's biggest lead was at 32-24 with 17:44 on a Trapp 3-pointer.
The Wildcats face South Carolina State Monday.
