DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Mikel Trapp scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Bethune-Cookman men's basketball team to victory in the 2014-15 season opener at Moore Gymnasium. After a contentious first half, the Wildcats defeated Trinity College, 91-69.
The Redshirt senior went 9-of-15 and shot 50 percent beyond the arc for the fifth 20-plus point outing of his career. Clemmye Owens posted 19 points and Jeffon Powell and Ricky Johnson scored 12 apiece.
The Wildcats (1-0) dominated on defense by out-rebounding the Tigers, 43-20. In his B-CU debut, junior transfer Quintin Brewer led B-CU in boards with 12, and added two blocks and two steals.
Trinity College's Kevin Brown scored 24 points, while Rajiv Prabhakar and Jerome Harris scored 14 and 12, respectively. John Coleman grabbed four rebounds for the visiting Tigers.
Despite the back-and-forth rhythm of the first half, there were only five ties and two lead changes. Trinity (3-5) secured the largest lead of the half, 12-5, off a jumper by Brown at 16:34, before B-CU took over on a 17-10 run over the next eight minutes.
Momentum swung back to the Tigers as time wound down, but the Wildcats chipped away at the scoreboard and a final 3-pointer hit by Trapp with 10 seconds left forced a 42-42 tie at intermission.
Bethune-Cookman never relinquished control after that point. Trinity managed a basket to open the second half, but B-CU went off with a 14-0 run that included a pair of dunks from Powell to seize a 56-44 advantage. Only once did the Tigers mount a minor comeback, but the Wildcats coasted comfortably to victory.
B-CU heads west to face Arizona State on Monday, Nov. 17, with tip-off slated for 10:05 p.m (EST).
