Visions Of Victory #8: Symbolism of Success

Visions Of Victory #8: Symbolism of Success

I am a man of symbolism. In my life, I am constantly on the lookout for people, places and things that have meaning and relevance in my personal and professional journey. So many times I have been able to find solace, courage and solutions for many perplexing situations simply by relating these acts of symbolism to my life.

Earlier this week while planning for our weekly athletic senior staff meeting I found something in my personal bible studies that was relevant to our present-day situation in Wildcat Athletics. As I surveyed the room looking at our staff, I saw a diverse group of highly-competent administrators and coaches, who in their own unique ways brought a great deal to the table…although physically each of us are as diverse as the colors of the rainbow, we share the same passion for success and the same levels of integrity and professionalism. That's who we are at B-CU. But there is more.

As I opened the staff meeting with scripture and prayer, I was drawn to 2 Corinthians Chapter 8 Verse 12. In this passage, the apostle Paul was dealing with false teachers who were swaying the members of his young and growing church into becoming non-believers. They were haters who wanted to destroy the great work being done. In his letter to the young church he wrote in verse 12, "For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not."

I shared this scripture with our staff and it became clear to me that this verse symbolically speaks to our great staff at B-CU. First and foremost, our staff is of one mind focused on winning the right way. They each are willing to work and their minds are set on it…they also don't focus on what we do not have…they take what we have and win championships and change lives with a championship effort.

Take Donald Cooper for example. As our Director of Track & Field, he has quietly built us into MEAC Champs in men's track. His mind is set on recruiting, developing and graduating a superb group of young men and women as student-athletes. He markets the great climate of Florida, the proximity of the beach to our campus, the values of a Christian education and the tremendous opportunities to compete as an NCAA Division I student-athlete. He doesn't focus on the fact that we do not have a track. He celebrates what we have, and works to obtain what we need to have.

There are similar stories in our department and through their collective effort exists the reason we are so successful. I am so proud of each of them, and it is an honor to work daily alongside them.

Imagine if all of our alumni, fans, supporters and even haters would come to understand that these professionals like Coach Cooper are excelling with what they have and not focusing on what they do not have. Maybe somewhere out there we can find others who have a willing mind to invest in the great work being done in Wildcat Athletics; with their help we can attain what "he hath not."

Yours in Victory,
Lynn W. Thompson
