Wildcats Fall to Marshall in Softball Action, 2-1

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Jordan Dixon tossed a complete game for Marshall on Saturday morning, helping the Herd to a 2-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman in softball action inside Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. The game was a part of the annual Charleston Challenge hosted by the College of Charleston.

Marshall (3-0) struck early when leadoff hitter Morgan Zerkle singled and stole second to immediately place herself into scoring position. After being moved over via sacrifice bunt, the Marshall center fielder came in a play later off an Erica D'Orazio single shot back up the middle to give the Herd a 1-0 lead in the opening frame.

The Herd added the eventual winning run in the home-half of the second, using a Rebecca Myslenski single through the right side to plate Emileigh Cooper from second. Cooper served as a pinch runner replacing catcher Taylor McCord.

Bethune-Cookman (0-3) picked up its lone run of the game in the top-half of the fifth inning.

Wildcats second baseman Bryanna Campos plated Shamaria Engram with her second double of the 2015 campaign, pulling the lead down to the final of 2-1 in favor of the Herd.

After allowing two earned runs and four hits in the first two innings, B-CU starting pitcher Sabrina Anguiano settled down in the circle, striking out five batters and not allowing a single hit over the course of the final four frames.

Four Marshall Herd players secured hits in the game, with the RBI coming from D'Orazio and Myslenski.

B-CU had five players register hits, including Campos' double that also served as the RBI for the Cats.

The win went to Marshall's Jordan Dixon (2-0) as she scattered five hits and an unearned run across seven complete innings, posting seven strikeouts and not walking a single batter. The loss went to Anguiano who fell to 0-3 on the year.

The Wildcats continue action at the Charleston Challenge on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., when the Cats take on Army.
