MIAMI – Rookie Mariah Davis collected two of the four team hits as the Bethune-Cookman softball team was shut out, suffering a 7-0 setback to Florida International during the Wildcat's final game of the Felsberg Invitational in Miami.
After leaving two on base in the first, the Wildcats were unable to convert, allowing the Panthers to pull ahead early when Stephanie Texeira's two-run homer put FIU on top, 2-0 after one complete.
Davis was left stranded for B-CU in top of the third after reaching on a fielder's choice, then the Panthers struck again during the bottom half of the frame, adding two runs on a double steal and a RBI single up the middle.
A big fifth inning for FIU pushed the lead for the tournament host to 7-0 after the Panthers turned two hits into three runs, and the seven runs would stand for FIU, collecting the shutout victory.
In addition to Davis' two hits, Shamaria Engram and Wanda Darby each added hits to the Wildcat effort.
FIU collected eight team hits during the victory, led by Shelby Graves and Dominique Grossman's multi-hit performances in addition to Taxeira's two-run homer.
Rachel Dwyer threw a complete game for the Panthers, walking three during her 26 faced batters.
Sabrina Anguiano suffered her 12th loss of the season, spending 4.1 innings in the circle, allowing seven hits, seven earned runs and five walks.
B-CU returns to action Friday, March 6 during day one of the three-day Florida Atlantic Invitational. The Wildcats open with Memphis at 3:45 p.m. in Boca Raton, Florida.
