BOCA RATON, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman's offensive slump continued during day one of the Florida Atlantic Parents' Weekend Tournament, as the Wildcats suffered a 12-0 run-rule setback to the nationally-ranked No. 11/12 Florida State Seminoles and a 6-1 loss to Hofstra, Friday (March 6) in Boca Raton, Florida.
Game One
The nationally-ranked Seminoles were too much for B-CU during the first game of the afternoon as FSU strung together 11 hits including four homers to finish the Wildcats in five innings.
After holding FSU scoreless in the top-half of the opening frame, Mariah Davis singled through the left side giving the Wildcats their first baserunner of the contest with one out. Sophia Ortega followed with a strike out before, Shamaria Engram reached first on a throwing error from Seminole pitcher Jessica Burroughs, advancing Davis. Kaitlin Alamprese struck out swinging to end the inning, as the Wildcat's stranded their only two baserunners of the game in the bottom of the first.
It was not until the top of the third until the FSU scoring rally began. The Seminoles scored two runs on three hits, including two homers and one Wildcat error.
Leading 2-0, FSU added to its lead in the fourth after opening the frame with two additional homeruns. B-CU exchanged Bailey Conner for Sabrina Anguiano in the circle as the Seminoles added five more runs in the inning, totaling seven on five hits.
Three more runs scored in the top of the fifth gave FSU the run-rule advantage as the Wildcats were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, suffering the 12-0 setback.
Anguiano (2-13) suffered the loss for B-CU after spending three innings on the mound and giving up five hits, five runs and one walk.
Burroughs (5-2) earned the FSU victory throwing a complete five innings for the Seminoles allowing two B-CU hits while fanning five.
Game Two
Playing visitor during game two, the Wildcats left seven stranded during the loss.
Calesha Shelly opened the game with a walk, as she advanced into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt from Davis. Ortega flew out to center field before Engram walked adding the second B-CU baserunner of the inning. An Alamprese fly-out to right field ended the first frame for the Wildcats.
A huge five hit, five run for the Pride finished the first, giving Hofstra the early 5-0 lead.
Hofstra added a solo run on two hits in the bottom of the second before innings three through five went scoreless for both teams.
B-CU's early hole was too much to overcome as the Wildcat's opened the sixth frame with an Alamprese double to left center with one out. Bryanna Campos strike out made two outs before Melissa Berouty's single to right center, scored Alamprese, putting B-CU on the board for the first time on the day.
The Pride did not answer in the bottom of the sixth, but the early Hofstra lead held, as the Wildcats suffered the 6-1 loss.
Anguiano (2-14) suffered the B-CU loss throwing the opening two innings, giving up seven hits, six runs and one walk. Conner finished the contest for the Wildcats throwing four innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six batters.
Morgan Lashley (3-1) picked up the Pride victory throwing 6.1 innings allowing all four B-CU hits, one run, four walks and fanning three Wildcats.
Bethune-Cookman returns to the diamond Saturday, March 7 as the Wildcats open the day with a 9 a.m. first pitch against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers followed by a 3:45 p.m. match-up with tournament-host Florida Atlantic.
